Putting It All to Bed (Or, The Year That Was)

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Man. That was a year, huh? Look at me, talking about 2011 like it’s already packed up and left. Its shoes are still by the door. Like I said last week, for me, this year is best summarized with one word: adjust. I’ve made many adjustments. Still am. But I think, like most things, all of the change, all the refocusing, the re-imagining, it is/will be for the better.

In fact, this morning we just brought about perhaps the very last change of 2011. We converted our son’s crib to a toddler bed. He was excited. Almost as much as his mother.

Watching him naturally slip off his fire engine slippers and climb into his remodeled bed with a wide grin was undeniably a sweet moment. But then when he called for some books, and with such urgency — “I need Life of a Car and I need to have my Winnie the Pooh.” — I was tapping at my chest, trying to send a  message to my heart to man up. Quit all the melting, woodja?

There is no way to count the number of times I pause to look at this kid and say (mostly out loud), How did you get here? You used to be this little baby. I know, it’s the mushy crap that most parents say, even 20, 30 years after the word “baby” is wildly inaccurate. It’s the same thing with how often I/we marvel at how quickly time has slipped by. I mean, we are talking 2012 here, folks. Honestly, didn’t I  just say this yesterday:

Man. That was some year, huh? 2009 2006 2000. Somebody put some Prince on!

No matter how quickly those 12 months go by, I believe there are lessons in looking back. I like to take my memory lane ride via my camera, and this year I’m trying something a tad different: My Year in Pictures… the video! It’s my first iMovie, y’all, so this is what typed excitement looks like:
}} ^^^ (Yeah, I tried. Anyway, you get my meaning.)

Have a look at this 1:35 video clip of the year that was:

Here’s wishing you everything bright and beautiful in 2012, friends.

A lovely slideshow – and some of my favorite photos from your blog are in there. Definitely my two favorite family portraits: one from behind and one in the car. Happy new year to all of you, too!
