Get Proper Maternity Leave in the U.S. First, Then We’ll Talk About Who’s Wasting It

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

In the U.S., maternity leave is a prickly subject. In fact, according to Think Progress, “out of 178 nations, the U.S. is one of three that does not offer paid maternity leave benefits, let alone paid leave for fathers.” And there was this great infographic to drive the point home — in pretty colors.

Of course, the maternity leave debate goes beyond Have It/Don’t Have It. There’s also the recent discussion of mat leave being an “outdated notion for high-achieving women.”

Today, a new log for the fire: Is maternity leave wasted on new moms?

Sigh.

The only thing I want to hear in a debate about maternity leave in this country is how we can get more of it, and paid. Move up to the blue area on this color wheel — or at least yellowy-green, man. Come on!
