Mama’s Delight (Say, Up Jump the Boogie)

Like I often say: These kids, man, they be knowin’.

Some background …

Earlier this week while hustling our way through Target, my son found some forgotten/discarded a tiny rubbery toy frog.

“Finders keepers, right, Mom?”

“Uh, riiiight, but how do you know about finders keepers?”

“Because that’s what it is: finders get to be keepers of the things that they find.”

“Sir, you are correct. Enjoy that blue frog, then.”

And with that, we headed home with our new squishy friend chilling in The Youngster’s carseat cup holder. My son was very into his new frog and held him while he played and ate dinner. The frog, after a thorough steam-clean (because Mama is like that) got to sit on the tub’s edge during bath time and joined the boy for night-night too.

The frog even got a special name from the kid: Hip Hop a.k.a Hippity Hop.

HipHopFrog

Cut to this morning when Hippity — who kind of got replaced by a car over the last day or so — was back in the spotlight.

Hippity Hop. Hippity Hop,” my son sang as he got dressed for summer camp-school (who knows what to call it, really).

Naturally, I started singing along. And naturally, that led me to the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” I mean, obvi, right?

So I started, “Now what you hear is not a test, I’m rapping to –”

And without a pause or blink, here comes my son with …

” — the beat!”

WHUUUUTTT??! How do you know this song, young one?

I laughed and clapped and cheered in delight. Then I screamed for my husband like I had dropped a weighted piggy bank on my toes. <— Yeah, he wasn’t so impressed with that part.  And we did our duet again.

The Youngster liked it a lot, and asked me to sing it again and again, setting him up for his line each time. You already know what happened next. IT HAD TO HAPPEN NEXT!

Yes, picture me trying to slowly teach a 4.5-year-old the rest of the lyrics. Picture it, because that’s exactly what went down.

I said a hip hop,
Hippie to the hippie,
The hip, hip a hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.
Now, what you hear is not a test, I’m rappin’ to the beat,
And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet.
See, I am Wonder Mike, and I’d like to say hello,
To the black, to the white, the red and the brown,
The purple and yellow. But first, I gotta
Bang bang, the boogie to the boogie,
Say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie,
Let’s rock, you don’t stop,
Rock the rhythm that’ll make your body rock.

That’s as far as we got. And, yes, we will likely sing it this entire weekend. And you don’t stop!

So that’s my weekend, here are few fun and interesting things to set you off on yours:

With all of this school talk, perfect time for a heads-up: Ms. Mary Mack has a fab giveaway for Back-to-School coming very soon. Stay tuned, it’s a good one!
