{Vlog} Teaching Kids About “Taking the Stairs”

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Here’s a link to the Jenifer Lewis video I mentioned in the vlog. She’s talking to artists about achieving professional and personal success. It’s real talk, and it’s so, so good. (Warning: Some NSFW language.)

This is a really good topic. We definitely want our kiddo (6 years old now) to understand the power of work to earn things he wants.

We are trying to transition from having certain things be treated as if he’s doing a special 1-time contribution upon request, to having certain chores be his responsibility regularly because we all share the work of the household. His dad and I clean and cook, etc. so why shouldn’t he? (Though obviously not as much as we do, he’s just 6!)

I do think we’re overdue for starting to give him some kind of allowance. He’s already learned to save up money from birthday/holiday gifts towards desired purchases… and his dad and I each get an allowance from the general fund each month to spend on whatever we want, so why shouldn’t he?

Thanks for the comment, Skye! I like the sound of some of the systems your family has in place. Solid lessons already in play.
